Chapter 5: Entering the Modern Era

1961 - 1967

New traditions, technology and transformational facilities characterize the rapid developments of the 1960s at NIU. Teaching and scholarship grow in prestige and reach beyond campus, while a new governance system links NIU and ISU.

The Huskie Fight Song is introduced (1961)
NIU obtains its first computer (1962)
University Center
University Center is completed (1962)
Alma Mater song officially adopted (1963)
Center for Southeast Asian Studies established (1963)
Huskie Stadium opens (1965)
University Press established (1965)
College of Continuing Education established (1966)
The Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award is established (1966)
NIU placed under the Board of Regents (1967)
