Chapter 8: The Expanding Mission
1974-1982

The building blocks of a modern university are stacked higher in the 1970s, with a magnificent new library, a new college, a law school, and partnerships with national laboratories. Student support centers continue to grow, while a new president builds doctoral programs and a musical legend leaves his mark.

College of Professional Studies (now Health & Human Sciences) established (1974)
Duke Ellington performs last concert of his life in HSC Ballroom (1974)
Women’s Studies program established (1976)
Founders Memorial Library opens (1977)
Latino Center is established (1978)
Campus Childcare center established (1978)
William Monat becomes NIU’s eighth president (1979)
College of Law is established (1979)
The Presidential Commissions are established (1980)
Formal relationships established with Fermilab and Argonne national labs (1982)
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Commons is completed (1982)
