1952 – 1961

A new library, expanded graduate programs and a significant name change headline a decade of enormous growth in both enrollment and campus facilities. Old administrative structures give way to new colleges, while public radio and international scholarship raise the profile of Illinois’ fastest-growing institution of higher learning.

First faculty member to receive a Fulbright grant (1952)

Swen Parson Library Opens (1952)

Public radio comes to Northern (1954)

Northern Illinois State College

NISTC name changed to Northern Illinois State College (1955)

Name changed to Northern Illinois University (1957)

Board authorizes Master of Arts, Master of Science degrees (1958)

Colleges of Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Fine and Applied Arts are established (1959)

Referendum passes to allow state bond issue of $195,000,000 for new academic buildings around state (1960)

First doctoral degrees approved (1961)

The College of Business is established (1961)
